The Cause
Students in Western Jamaica pursuing tertiary education can look forward to financial assistance towards their studies. This news comes with the announcement of the MoBay City Run, a new charity road race event staged with the aim to create a fund that will provide a mechanism via which the students can seek assistance towards the financing of their education. The fund will provide assistance for students attending UWI and UTECH Western Campuses, Sam Sharpe Teachers College and Montego Bay Community College.
“More than 25% of students enrolled in these tertiary institutions are unable to cover their fees in any given semester,” said Janet Silvera, Chairman for the MoBay City Run Organizing Committee. “Since the estimated number of students in our four institutions is approximately 5,000, we are looking at over 1,000 students in these four Montego Bay tertiary institutions each semester who are struggling to pay fees and risk being de-registered or unable to complete their examinations.”
