Church member Dr. Tina Scott is doing a remarkable thing. She is putting together an event with the hopes of helping thousands of students in Jamaica have a successful school year. Dr. Scott, who has roots in Jamaica, noted on a recent trip that many of the schools there were negatively affected by COVID-19, leaving students without even the basic necessities for learning. She began to wonder, “How can I help the school children start off this new school year and make it a successful year for them?”
A fundraising idea came to light when Dr. Scott, a pediatrician and Medical Director for the South Miami Children’s Clinic, returned to Florida and participated in a 5K race endorsed by the Consul General of Jamaica, Oliver Mair. She decided to create a 5K event specifically to raise funds for the schools in Jamaica.
Dubbed the 5K Gallop, the race will take place on Saturday, August 27, 2022, at Zoo Miami to raise money as well as celebrate Jamaica’s 60th anniversary of independence.
We have pledged our church’s support and participation to Tina, and here is where the really good news comes in. Each of us can help! We are encouraging church members and friends to run or walk the 5K, to volunteer as helpers that day, or to donate.
For all you walkers/runners, please register online at 5kgallop.org, and let Pastor Laurie know that you registered so we can be together that day. If you can volunteer, please also let her know and she will share these names with Tina. And if you can donate, please click here 5kgallop.org and give generously.
We are so proud of Tina and her vision, her work, and her compassion for others. We are Gables UCC strong out in the community and beyond.
